Materials Science and Engineering (BSc. with ≥ 180 Credits/ECTS Minimum Knowledge and Minimum Achievements) or related disciplines
- Applicant has not ultimately failed in a required examination
- Sufficient proficiency in English (B2) for the English track; German language skills are recommended but not required
You can find further information here.
You should have a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent degree in the Bachelor’s Program of Materials Science and Engineering or very closely related disciplines, which was reached within a standard period of studies of at least three years with a minimum of 180 ECTS.
Yes, you can apply with a provisional transcript (an official record of the courses you have taken and the grades received for each course), but the Bachelor’s diploma must be presented at enrolment at the latest.
Admission to the Master’s degree in Materials Science and Technology requires proof that the applicant has skills in at least the following subjects. These have to correspond to be equivalent to the learning objectives, content, and credit points according to the current module handbook for the Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science and Materials Technology at KIT:
- Metals and Material Physics (≥ 14 Credits/ECTS)
- Ceramic (≥ 12 Credits/ECTS)
- Polymers (≥ 6 Credits/ECTS)
- Functional Materials (≥ 10 Credits/ECTS)
- Higher Mathematics (≥ 21 Credits/ECTS)
- Technical Mechanics (≥ 13 Credits/ECTS)
- Experimental Physics (≥ 15 Credits/ECTS)
- Inorganic and Applied Chemistry (≥ 16 Credits/ECTS)
For further information, please refer to Article 6 of this document.
Once your application is received by the KIT, your application will be checked for completeness before being forwarded to the Admission committee. They will check if the content of the studies you have submitted meets the requirements for a master’s program at KIT and then make a decision regarding admission.
Sadly, we cannot pre-check your documents.
This means, that if you have already irrevocable failed in a course at another University and are now prohibited to take part in this course again, you are not eligible to apply for Materials Science and Engineering (MSc). If you have passed all your courses in your previous studies, then there is nothing to worry about. This is a legal requirement.
For the English-taught track, we only require English language skills.
Sufficient proficiency in the English language corresponding at least to level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (GER) or an equivalent level, as confirmed by one of the following internationally recognized tests, for example:
a. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), with at least 550 points in the paper-based test or 88 points in the internet-based test, or
b. IELTS with a total result of at least 6.5 and no section being below 5.5
Applicants who received their Bachelor’s degree in an English program or in English-speaking countries shall not require proof of proficiency in the English language. The official language of the program must be indicated on the graduation certificate, its supplement, in the transcript of records, or in a corresponding confirmation by the university.
Every student that fulfills the requirements mentioned above will be accepted for the studies. There is no minimum grade required.
Applicants who do not meet the admission requirements according to §6 of the admission regulations, can alternatively prove their suitability for this degree program by passing an entrance examination.
Applicants need to apply online for the entrance exam for Materials Science and Engineering (MSc) no later than 14 days prior to the date the entrance test will be held.
In case applicants are not able to provide proof of their skills, they may still be enrolled in the program if they prove the qualification needed for the program by passing an entrance examination.
The exact dates and venue of the entrance examination will be announced by KIT on the websites of the KIT Department of Mechanical Engineering at least six weeks prior to the date of examination.
The entrance examination is a 90-minute test in writing and consists of four parts, each being evaluated with 25 points. The entrance examination partly may have the form of a multiple-choice test. For more information, please check the Statutes for Admission.

The Cluster of Excellence 3DMM2O is a research Cluster funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft as part of the Excellence Strategy. It is a collaboration between Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and Heidelberg University (Uni HD). The Cluster 3D Matter Made to Order (3DMM2O) aims at bringing 3D Additive Manufacturing from the macroscale to the micro-, nano-, and eventually to the molecular scale and at applying these technologies in three selected application Thrusts.
The MSc in Materials Science and Engineering is a separate study program at KIT and combines fundamentals with applications and is particularly attractive to prospective students who have an interest in the natural sciences and a practical orientation at the same time. Members of the Cluster of Excellence offer lectures within the framework of the study program.
